A High-Energy Space Designed to Perform

At Hannold Associates, we know that successful fitness environments are about more than equipment—they’re about experience, flow, and brand. Our recent design-build collaboration with Crunch Fitness Frederick, in partnership with Hannold Management, brought these values together in a bold, immersive, 40,000-square-foot flagship facility that delivers energy, durability, and function at every turn.

This project was an exciting opportunity to merge national fitness brand standards with site-specific needs and architectural creativity—producing a gym that not only works hard, but looks and feels dynamic from the moment members walk through the doors.

Designing with Performance and Personality

Crunch Fitness is known for its “No Judgments” philosophy—a vibrant, inclusive approach to wellness that caters to seasoned athletes, first-timers, and everyone in between. Our design needed to reflect this core value by blending a high-performance layout with a colorful, motivational environment.

We focused on:

  • Bold Visual Identity: Large-scale graphics, vibrant accent walls, exposed ceilings, and strategic lighting placements that reinforce the Crunch brand while elevating user energy levels.

  • Zoned Workout Areas: Clearly defined spaces for cardio, strength training, HIIT, Olympic lifting, and group fitness classes—each tailored for optimal circulation and equipment layout.

  • Durability in Design: High-impact flooring systems, anti-scuff wall protections, reinforced framing for equipment mounts, and materials selected to withstand continuous 24/7 use.

  • Welcome and Flow: A welcoming front desk and open entry path create an easy orientation for guests, while wayfinding and signage support user independence throughout the space.

A Fully Integrated Design-Build Delivery

By managing this project as a design-build team—with Hannold Associates leading the architecture and Hannold Management overseeing construction—we were able to provide a streamlined, efficient process for the franchise owner.

Technical Challenges, Smart Solutions

Transforming a large retail shell into a functional gym came with its share of technical requirements. Our team addressed:

  • Sound attenuation strategies to manage noise transmission between training areas and adjacent tenants.

  • Mechanical coordination for fresh air, humidity control, and temperature balance throughout different workout zones.

  • Lighting design to accommodate the open ceiling plan while enhancing safety and ambiance.

Our experience in adaptive reuse and tenant fit-outs was crucial in navigating these layers of complexity—and delivering a polished, brand-aligned product.

The Result: A Standout Community Fitness Hub

Today, Crunch Fitness Frederick serves hundreds of members daily with a space that is dynamic, durable, and energizing. It has become more than just a fitness center—it’s a social anchor, a wellness hub, and a visual expression of the Crunch community.

We’re proud to have played a role in helping the franchisee launch a location that’s already generating buzz and setting a new standard for commercial fitness environments in the region.
